Wednesday, October 1
Please plan to join San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne and “America’s Finest” officers for a one-hour look “Beyond the Headlines.” Enjoy a free lunch while officers share their experiences and respond to your questions. You’ll see how San Diegans are producing law-enforcement efficiencies through their support of the San Diego Police Foundation. At the end of the program, we will provide an opportunity for you to join our efforts with a low-key “ask” for support.

Accomplishments
  • Detectives now use 7 new computer systems and sophisticated software to review commercial and residential surveillance camera media to help apprehend criminal suspects. This investigative tool is now operational at seven police locations.
  • SDPD’s Homeless Outreach Team benefits from updated equipment and expanded mental health specialist hours. This nationally recognized program offers real solutions rather than the unending cycle of arrest, jail, and return to the street.
  • Canines used for searches and suspect apprehension are important contributors to efficient police work and play a primary role as an alternative to the use of deadly force. Foundation grants ensure retiree and replacement schedules stay on track.
  • State-of-the-art handheld communication devices and geographic-based location capabilities will be put to work by the San Diego Police Department thanks to a $1 million gift from QUALCOMM Incorporated®. A pilot study of 300 handheld cellular devices will accelerate two-way information transmission and provide direct access to federal, state, regional and local law enforcement data systems.
  • A programmable electronic turning target system enhances firearms qualifying by replacing some of the 1930s firearms training at the police pistol range.
  • “Inside SDPD” quarterly programs offer citizens hands-on opportunities to get a feel for the work of police officers. Programs include interactive use-of-force training, vehicle stops (guests are the cops) and participation by specialized units like K-9, S.W.A.T. and the crime lab. This program consistently earns an excellent rating. Invitations and registration form.
  • Technology upgrades to computers, communications links and imaging have transformed the operations center where major incidents are managed.
  • An ability to see above the crowd, move the crowd and patrol San Diego’s many canyon areas are some of the resource efficiencies made possible by SDPD’s Mounted Enforcement Unit. A six-horse trailer and eight new saddles provide transportation efficiency and longer service for our horses.
  • SDPD’s downtown bike team has 11 new rides complete with lights and sirens.
  • S.W.A.T officer protection was improved by the purchase of 25 new ballistic tactical vests.
