Cop Hop - An evening with a 40's flair
Organizers of Saturday's Cop Hop fundraiser chose a fun 40’s theme to focus attention on their cause: a safer San Diego. Hosted by the San Diego Police Foundation and the San Diego Police Historical Association (SDPHA), the inaugural Cop Hop raised $65,000 to support the work of the two organizations. Held at the elegant home of Ramin Pourteymour in La Jolla Farms, the soiree attracted a crowd of nearly five hundred attendees to "celebrate the history and heroes of the SDPD."
Mayor Jerry Sanders gave the opening remarks and Chief of Police William Lansdowne delivered a compelling message about the nature of police work, inspiring support for the efforts of San Diego’s uniformed officers. Honored guests included State Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, San Diego County DA Bonnie Dumanis, Sheriff Bill Gore, Sheriff Bill Kolender, City Councilmembers Sherri Lightner and Marti Emerald.
From the welcome at the residence’s circular drive to the last jitterbug danced to the big band sound of Big Time Operator, attendees were transported back to an earlier era. Vintage police vehicles from the SDPHA’s collection – the largest in the nation – set the tone, while models in period couture mingled with attendees in 40’s garb and officers clad in vintage uniforms. A ride in the antique paddy wagon and dinner for eight at Donovan’s Prime Seafood drew one of the biggest bids during the live auction. Even the police ABLE helicopter got into the action, giving an airborne announcement to the crowd. A focal point of the evening came with a gift from Craig Irving of The Irving Group. Police Foundation Chairman, Darin Andersen, received the donation of $20,000 with words of praise for corporate leaders and philanthropists who step up to support a safer San Diego. The gift will purchase 144 digital camera kits for use by patrol officers in evidence collection.
"Creating a safer San Diego by supporting SDPD is a cause all San Diegans can care about,” says Police Foundation CEO, Sara Wilensky Napoli. “The vehicles, badges and uniforms we preserve at the Police Museum allow us to tell the story of the men and women who have served our community in a remarkable way that inspires future generations to step up," added Police Historical Association Executive Commissioner Ed LaValle. "This history came alive at the Cop Hop." The San Diego Police Foundation and the San Diego Police Historical Association invite you to an evening with a 40's flair!
