You made a difference at Women in Blue

At its inaugural Women in Blue luncheon, the San Diego Police Foundation named three honorees: San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, San Diego’s First Lady Rana Sampson, and San Diego Police Department (SDPD) Assistant Chief, Shelley Zimmerman. Considered trailblazers in nontraditional careers, the honorees shared insights and anecdotes from their paths to success. The event was attended by 150 women and men from the business, nonprofit and government sectors at Donovan’s Circle of 5ths restaurant in the Gaslamp Quarter.

"Of course, blue is the color of the San Diego Police Department’s uniform. It is also the color often worn by top business leaders," noted Sara Wilensky Napoli, CEO of the San Diego Police Foundation. "Traditionally, blue symbolizes trust, honor and strength, so it was a fitting theme for this event, which is all about courage, community service, and leadership."

Thank you to our Women in Blue sponsors and attendees. Your generous support made a difference by helping to further the mission of the Foundation in creating a safer San Diego.

Sketchcop software helps police identify suspects

The San Diego Police Department is now utilizing the latest in cutting–edge software to identify criminal suspects thanks to the support of the Wells Fargo Foundation. In February, the Foundation gave a generous $10,000 gift to support the inaugural Women in Blue luncheon and the purchase of SketchCop Facette Design software for the Department’s child abuse and sex crimes unit. Investigators now have the ability to create "life–like" composites that will lead to quicker apprehensions and result in a reduction of potential victims in our community. The gift is part of the bank’s focus on local community support in the area of human services and child abuse prevention.

Community members of all ages experienced what an officer in training needs to learn as part of the Inside SDPD program. The four-hour program offered at the Police Training Academy on the Miramar College Campus gave an inside look at the work of the San Diego Police Department.

More than 85 participants, including leaders from corporate partner Verizon Wireless, rotated through 4 simulated training exercises after an introduction by Chief Lansdowne and Assistant Chief Zimmerman. The interactive simulations were: SWAT Driving, Vehicle Stops and Firearms Training. The day ended with a lunch presentation and overview.

The next Inside SDPD program will be offered on Saturday, May 14, 2011. Click here to reserve your spot for this one–of–a–kind experience!
