BEYOND THE HEADLINES—OCT. 20
Beyond the Headlines logo

People like you (and a whole lot of police officers) are realizing the exponential impact charitable investments have on the safety of our communities and families. You can help set in motion a groundswell of support on October 20 by joining us to focus—for just one hour—on the men and women who protect and serve.

If you join us for lunch Oct. 20, and invite a colleague, friend or family member to come along, we will achieve our goals.  (Feel free to forward this email.)

California’s prisoner release comes at a time when budgets have been cut for programs that typically play a role when prisoners transition back into our communities.  The burden will fall on local law enforcement.  And the San Diego Police Department’s ranks are stretched.  Every training and technology asset we can add to an officer’s tool belt provides a safety and efficiency advantage.

Please show your support for Mayor Jerry Sanders, Police Chief William Lansdowne and the officers that work every day to ensure safety in the neighborhoods where we live, work and play.

Thursday, October 15 is the registration deadline.  Invite a few friends to join you, there is no advance cost.  If you like what you hear, we hope you will be inspired to contribute.

Expanding safety, efficiency
Today, the police department is approx. 250 officers below its 2,127-officer budget.  Although the Foundation does not provide assistance for personnel expenses, lethal weapons, or standard operational items like patrol cars, we’re working on major upgrades for SDPD’s investigations, evidence collection and evidence management with additional digital cameras, voice and video recorders and new technology systems.  In some SDPD operational areas, it's a first step into the 21st century.

One hour, once a year
Thank you in advance for your consideration and feel free to reply via email or contact Bridget with questions 858–453–5060.

You  make all the difference.

You're Invited!
SDPD Behind the scenes

You’ve seen it on TV, but is it the truth? From a routine traffic stop to the use of deadly force, you will experience what it’s like to be a cop when you join Police Chief William Lansdowne and some of “America’s Finest” police officers (police dogs and horses) on Saturday, November 14 , 2009.

This dynamic interactive program is an excellent eye-opening experience. We’ll take you behind the scenes to experience split-second decision making firsthand in use-of-force, vehicle stop, and firearms training scenarios.

  • When law enforcement uses lethal force, what are the guidelines? Do they fire more shots than necessary?
  • What are the alternatives to lethal force?
  • What level of force is appropriate? When?

NEWS

SWAT Team Maritime Training
A recent grant made a collaborative maritime training program possible for 9 members of the SDPD SWAT team.  The 4-day program included U.S. Navy and police divers and advanced the goal of aligning tactics and procedures when missions involve one of San Diego’s many waterways.

SafetyNet   ranked high by educators, parents

In partnership with the regional law enforcement San Diego Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and in cooperation with schools, employers, and community groups, our SafetyNet™ public education program helps parents untangle the web of confusion they often feel about their kids’ cyber activities. In middle school classrooms, educators use SafetyNet™ activities to help children make safe and responsible cyber choices. Facing a future of evolving cyber challenges, schools and parents want us to expand our reach.

In the spring, nearly 1700 middle school students participated in the program.  Youth cited learning experiences and 87% of educators rated SafetyNet™ activities “very valuable” or “extremely valuable.”

The goal of our SafetyNet public education program is to increase responsible and ethical cyber choices.  The middle school program is free, thanks to a cooperative agreement with NetSmartz® and a grant awarded the Foundation by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.  We are enrolling a limited number of new school sites now.  For information, please contact Carrie Farrell, Program Manager, safetynet@sdpolicefoundation.org.

Welcome new directors
Please join us in welcoming directors who have recently joined the Foundation’s governing board.

Increasing citizen preparedness aids first responders
Thanks to a generous grant from Qualcomm Incorporated®, the San Diego Police Foundation (SDPF) is helping nine public safety agencies increase citizens’ disaster preparedness. Grants totaling $150,000 will be used to purchase training equipment and facilitate a variety of educational programs, including the training of Community Emergency Response Teams

The grantmaking effort was made possible by a dedicated advisory task force led by Joe Perez, a long-standing SDPF director and retired Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Secret Service, San Diego.  Joining him to coordinate the Request for Proposal process and extensive proposal review were: David Cohen, retired Manager of Media Services, San Diego Police Department; Pat Sumrow, retired Division Chief, San Miguel Fire Department; Jeff Segall, V.P. of Marketing and Public Affairs, Tri–City Hospital; and Frank Bucheit, president, Survive-All Industries, Inc.  Their expertise, enthusiasm and commitment resulted in resource allocations that will serve the region well.
