Join us for a FREE lunch with SDPD

Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006
12:00 – 1:00 p.m.

Our “Beyond the Headlines” luncheon is a great opportunity to get a feel for the successes and challenges of men and women who wear a bulletproof vest and badge to work.

It’s also an important fundraising event for the San Diego Police Foundation, a nonprofit organization that puts charitable dollars to work on crime prevention, law enforcement and public safety needs in our communities.

Our guests always enjoy a brief dynamic program. Please plan to bring a friend or two and reserve your seats early. If you like what you hear, we hope you’ll make a contribution.

In Memoriam

“Athos”

For some police dogs, the joy of going to work doesn't last eight to nine years. “Athos,” the 7-year-old partner of Officer Clint Crockett, lost his life to liver cancer. We're grateful for Athos' service and extend to Clint our sympathy for his loss.

Police dog apprehends carjacking suspect

August 7, 2006 - A car stolen at knifepoint, and fleeing suspect led SDPD to set up a perimeter search in the Fairmount Village area. Residents helped with the search, and the suspect was found hiding in a garage nearby. He failed to come out when ordered to do so and a police service dog was sent in. Suspect received a dog bite before surrendering. He was taken into custody without further problems.

The courage of SDPD police service dogs helps protect citizens and the police officers they work side-by-side with every day. Gifts large and small are helping the Police Foundation ensure the efficiency of the SDPD Canine Unit by contributing to the timely replacement of retiring police canines. Our K-9 Retiree Replacement Program is an ongoing need. It ensures that SDPD's hard-working police dogs retire when it's time. They live out their lives with their best friends—the officers who have worked with them for 40 hours a week. The cost for young police service dogs to replace retirees is $8,500 per dog.

You can help, find out how.

$50,000 grant from AT&T provides new crime fighting technology

In the past, investigation of San Diego crimes captured on surveillance cameras has been limited by technology availability. However, a $50,000 grant made to the San Diego Police Foundation from AT&T and the AT&T Foundation, will fund stand-alone computer systems with sophisticated software for the SDPD. The grant will also provide essential training to officers in order to maximize the use of this technology.

The technology gives the San Diego Police Department the ability to pull details from the surveillance media that normal playback systems would not provide. It can freeze frames, enhance imaging, de-blur, de-noise, reconstruct, and stabilize. It also has the ability to measure suspects, track the motion of individuals, compute movement velocity, highlight suspect/victim faces, identify license plates, and much more.

This high technology equipment serves as a moral boost and an efficiency tool during times of tough staffing. Thank you AT&T and the AT&T Foundation.
