Grant facilitates deployment of Mounted Enforcement Unit
-
Dec. 2004 - The San Diego Chargers funded a 6-horse trailer for the SDPD with a $20,000 gift to the San Diego Police Foundation. The trailer will solve a decade-old problem of a 10-horse unit, with transportation for seven.
The Mounted Enforcement Unit (MEU) is another example of law-enforcement efficiency. An officer on horseback can do the work of many officers on foot. With dramatically improved views of large areas and individuals, and the intimidating presence of a horse, SDPD officers are able to more easily encourage compliance. And not just in the City of San Diego. SDPD’s mutual aid agreements with other agencies mean that its MEU can be deployed countywide – for law enforcement and rescue efforts. During the Cedar fire, SDPD’s MEU officers were the only trained personnel allowed behind fire lines to help rescue horses and other large animals.
